Glimt 01 · Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands.
Beyond the ordinary.

A glimpse behind closed doors. Nine days with the people, the sea and the weather of eighteen islands in the North Atlantic.

The feeling

Some places are not meant to be seen. They are meant to be felt.

Fog that rolls in off the Atlantic and lifts again an hour later. Grass roofs, black wood, a candle in every window. And people who open their doors to you – not as a show, but because that is how it is done here.

GLIMT 01 takes you to the Faroe Islands the way few visitors ever see them: slowly, personally, and in the company of those who call them home.

Why this journey is different

8 guests.
2 dates.
No tour.

01

Eight guests, never more. Small enough to be welcomed into a home, to fit around one table, to change plans when the weather does.

02

Doors that usually stay closed. Dinner in a Faroese home, a lodge at the southern tip, a concert inside a sea cave, an evening with a family that has farmed the same land for generations.

03

Hosted from arrival to farewell. We travel with you, together with our partner on the islands and Helle, your Faroese guide. You don't plan, book or drive. You arrive.

Arriving with the wind

You land on Vágar and the islands begin at once: the waterfall at Múlafossur falling straight into the sea, fish soup at Fiskastykkið, a first walk through the grass-roofed old town of Tórshavn. On day two you sail with Birgir Enni, fish for your own lunch and enter Klæmintsgjógv by boat – a sea cave where music is played between the basalt walls.

At the southern edge

The ferry takes you south, to the island most travellers never reach. Here Arousiak, who lives on the island, is your guide. With her you spend a day on a community project, working alongside the people of Suðuroy. Two nights at Akraberg Lodge, at the very tip of the archipelago, where the lighthouse is the last light before the open Atlantic.

Slowing down

A morning at Ress Spa, then Saksun, Fossá and Tjørnuvík on the way north to Elduvík, a village of a few houses on a fjord. Slow mornings, the sheep farm at Selatrað, lunch cooked by a woman from the village – and a last evening at Roykstovan in Kirkjubøur, at the table of the Patursson family.

FAQ

Good to know.

What will the weather be like?

Changeable – and that is part of the experience. In May and September it is usually between 7 and 12 °C (45–54 °F), with wind, sun and rain sometimes in the same hour. We plan each day around the weather and tell you exactly what to pack.

How fit do I need to be?

No special fitness is needed. Walks are optional and moderate; you should be comfortable walking two to three hours on uneven ground.

How do I get there?

Vágar is reached via Reykjavík or Copenhagen. From North America the easiest way is via Reykjavík – Icelandair connects many US and Canadian cities, and the flight on to the Faroe Islands takes under two hours. We help you plan your flights, and a stopover in Iceland if you like.

Can I travel alone?

Yes, and you are very welcome. Every guest has a room of their own – there is no single supplement.

What if I need to cancel?

You will find all details in our travel conditions. We recommend travel cancellation insurance.

Which language is the journey in?

The journey is hosted in English.
